Specialist International Student Workshops and ResourcesThere are many specialised workshops available for international students for whom English is a second language, or a third, fourth or fifth language! In the first place, international students are encouraged to attend the orientation sessions, which are run every semester. In addition to the general orientation, a specialist orientation for international students is also offered. International students are encouraged to engage in the ongoing RSC Skills Development Workshop Program along with domestic students. More contact with domestic students is constantly highlighted as a request from International students and there is an opportunity in these workshop programs for students to interact. Individual faculties ensure that international students most in need of English language development are supported in a timely and comprehensive fashion. The Faculties target the support they offer to the individual needs of students; however, some of the support that may be offered includes the formation of writing groups, targetted language development workshops for small groups, or individual tuition. The University recognizes the need for targeted support to be offered to international students, because of the variation in English capability at entry and because of an expectation that HDR students will graduate with significantly improved spoken and written English. For this reason assistance is available for international HDR students through Language and Learning Support Services, which is part of International Student Services (ISS). To access this support, HDR students make an appointment with an ISS Language Advisor. The Research Students Centre (RSC) runs an induction program for international students introducing them to the research culture of QUT. This is the RAPID program (Research Advancement Program for International Doctoral students). The program is offered over four weeks, with 2 hour sessions covering such topics as 'a conversation with your supervisor', 'focus and scope', 'project management' and 'networking'. It provides an avenue to formation of students networks and peer support groups. The RSC will make a range of the resources provided in the orientation and the workshops available through Blackboard for international students and supervisors to access as required throughout candidature. In addition Teaching and Learning Support Services (TALSS) offer workshops, and online support for international research students that can be accessed by students in a timely fashion.
