girl asking question How do I get my Overseas Student Health Cover Card?
  • If you have paid QUT for your Overseas Student Health Cover, or if you are a sponsored student whose sponsor has organised your OSHC through QUT, your OSHC cards are issued by ISBS and can pick collected from the Student Centre on your QUT home campus.
How do I start my scholarship?
  • To activate your living allowance scholarship, please see the Scholarship Officer in the Research Students Centre located on level 3, O Block Podium, Gardens Point campus, or email the Scholarships Officer at research scholarships@qut.edu.au.
When should I begin my study?

  • The academic year at QUT begins at the end of February or the beginning of March each year. While, as a research student, you can begin your study at any time it is wise to remember that during the summer months from November to February there is limited activity on campus. During this time, many academic staff are absent from the campus conducting their own research projects or are on holiday. In order to make the best use of your time, it might be wise to begin your study once your supervisor is also on campus. To make sure when you should start, check with the appropriate faculty.
What happens if I fail to renew my visa?

  • If you do not renew your visa, QUT is obliged to report your case to DIAC for noncompliance with the rules of your student visa, and you may be asked to show cause why you should not be asked to leave Australia immediately.
    • To extend your visa, firstly apply for an extension to your candidature to the Research Students Centre using the Application for Extension Form.
    • Secondly, submit an IE Form, and a copy of your current visa to the Student Centre on any QUT campus..

  • Scholarship students should be aware that an extension to their scholarship must be approved prior to the approval of their visa extension.

  • It is expected that students would make an application for a visa extension at least six to eight weeks prior to their current visa expiry date.
What happens if I fail to enrol?

  • If you do not enrol, you will be reported to DIAC for non-compliance with the rules and regulations of your student visa.  If you do not enrol, QUT scholarships will not be activated.

  • If you are on a student visa, you are only permitted to enrol part time in your last semester.  If you are on any other type of visa, you need to give a copy of your current visa to ISBS and check with DIAC for the conditions of your visa.
Can I work? (get Tax file number, get a work permit, talk to faculty, talk to careers and employment) up arrow

  • Students on student visas should apply for permission to work at the Student Centre on their campus of study.  If you are on a visa other than a student visa, you should supply a copy of your visa to ISBS and check on the DIAC website for the conditions of your particular visa.

  • If you are on a student visa, you may only apply for a leave of absence under the following circumstances:
    • Illness or medical condition.  The application for LOA must include medical certificates stating that the nature of illness prevents that student from continuing studies.
    • Exceptional compassionate circumstances beyond the students control, for instance bereavement or serious illness of a parent, grandparent or sibling.  The application for LOA should include evidence that the circumstances are compassionate, exceptional and beyond the students control.  Documentary evidence will be required to support your application in these circumstances.

Is my visa valid after I submit my thesis? up arrow

  • The submission of your thesis indicates that you have completed your course of study.  If you are required to remain in Australia for the marking of your thesis, you will need a supporting letter from your supervisor indicating why it is necessary for you to remain for the marking.  This letter should be submitted with an IE Form for extension of your visa to the Student Centre any QUT campus.  Extensions for marking are initially approved for three months.  You may request a further three month extension by the same process if it is required.
