From a current student studeng giving advice

Understand requirements (Stage 2, confirmation of candidature, final seminar). Guidelines and advice are available from the Research Students Centre Website
Develop your relationship with your supervisor, find the best communication medium for you.
Visit the Language and Learning Centre.
Join research/ publication/ presentation training or workshops (by TALSS, Research Students Centre, Faculty, etc)
Attend research seminars (including confirmation of candidature and final seminars)
Practise makes perfect (writing and presentation), so find opportunities to practise in formal or informal sessions
Employ time management strategies (not only in your research but to keep track of family and social commitments)
Network by joining professional organisations as a student member - often student membership is free. Join mailing lists which relate to your research area, attend professional meetings
Publish in different forums (don’t wait until completion of your thesis)

From a supervisor supervisor giving advice

Make notes of your meetings with your supervisor and discuss these with your supervisor, clarify any issues you are not sure about.
Writing up your thesis is a continuous process, write often and start writing early in your candidature.  Be ready to revise and review.
Provide drafts to your supervisor often to ensure you get a timely appraisal of your progress and alerts of any concerns to be addressed.
Make sure the direction your research is taking is consistent with your plan.  If you need to change direction consult with your supervisor and revise your research plan and questions as necessary to accommodate this.
Know when you need to substantiate a finding or literature in the research, when to negate or discount it, when to deviate in your reading to explore different areas of literature and when to take responsibility for directing your research.
You will find it easier to write up and get the language right if you:
arrow bullet read existing theses available via the Australian Digital Thesis database on line.
arrow bullet address any style issues early (e.g., font size and style, margin size, where to put page numbers, referencing requirements etc)
arrow bullet start writing and get some feedback on it
arrow bullet start making presentations and get some feedback on them
arrow bullet start taking responsibility for managing the progress of your research
If you are experiencing personal problems seek support from Counselling Services available within the University, they are there to help.
Seek advice from your Faculty administrator if you have administrative questions.
